Azithromycin is an antibiotic used most often to treat respiratory infections in children and adults. For adult patients, these infections include bacterial bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia. Azithromycin can also be used to treat skin infections and some sexually transmitted diseases in adults. In children, Azithromycin treats some ear infections and pharyngitis/tonsillitis.
Azithromycin can be given to adult patients in a tablet or as an IV form. A liquid form is available to treat children. Azithromycin is taken once a day without regards to meals.
Azithromycin side effects, that may go away during azithromycin treatment, include mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. If Azithromycin side effects continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience Azithromycin side effects like hearing loss or ringing in the ears.
