What is Omacor?
Each capsule contains the active ingredients eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters. These substances are called omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and are also found in some oily marine fish.
What is Omacor used for?
. In combination with other medicines, for treatment after a heart attack to reduce the risk of further heart attacks and improve overall survival.
. To treat high blood triglyceride levels when changes to the diet have been insufficient, in patients at risk of developing pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or heart disease.
How to take Omacor?
Treatment after a heart attack
The usual dose is one capsule daily.
Hypertriglyceridaemia (high blood triglyceride levels)
The usual dose is 2 to 4 capsules a day as recommended by a doctor.
Take the capsules with water. You may take the capsules at meal times to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
The duration of treatment will be decided by your doctor.
Omacor should not be given to children.
If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case take the next dose as usual. Do not increase the dose to make up for missed doses.
It is unlikely for anyone to receive an overdose. Accidental overdose is unlikely to need special treatment.
Omacor has been shown to have a protective effect on the heart following a heart attack, and lowers the levels of triglycerides (a fat-like substance) in the blood.
Omacor capsules also contain 4 mg alpha-tocopherol, gelatin, glycerol and purified water.
Omacor comes in packs of 28 soft capsules.
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect:
Constipation,
Diarrhoea,
Burping or belching,
Swelling of abdomen (abdominal distension),
Acne,
Nausea and vomiting,
Eczema,
Smell or taste of fish.
